Storm Ashley fells several trees in Athlone area

Storm Ashley is causing disruption in the Athlone area, with strong winds leading to fallen trees in several areas.

A large tree fell in the St Joseph's Villas area of the town. The council was notified and was on its way to the scene earlier this afternoon.

Another tree came down on the Roscommon Road in Athlone, just past Ganly’s.

In addition, the weather has been affecting some transport services locally, as Irish Rail said the 1.40pm service from Galway to Dublin had been stopped in Athlone due to a tree on the line.

It said the train was now running approximately half an hour behind schedule.

A yellow weather warning for strong winds in the Midlands counties remains in place until midnight tonight.
