Giesy Jimenez, owner of Athlone-based business Jessy's Barbers, has spoken of her pride at becoming an Irish citizen.

The Bolivian native received her Irish citizenship at a ceremony in Dublin’s Convention Centre on Monday, September 16.

She has been living in Ireland for the past 12 years, and running her popular barber shop in Athlone for 10 years.

Speaking to the Westmeath Independent about about getting her citizenship, Giesy said it was a very special time for her and her family.

"I can't explain it - it was such a magic time for me. When I got the letter of invitation I couldn't believe it! I had to ask my husband 'Is this true?' - I couldn't breathe.

"When I went there, the woman asked for all my details - and I was so emotional I couldn't remember what year it was. It was amazing really, but I was so nervous."

The mother-of-four noted that citizenship means she can live a more simple, straightforward life.

"What I really liked was when [Minister Helen McEntee] said 'you are free - we are the same' 'We are working together now'. [Citizenship] gives me more of a simple life, and a more happy life. There's no more worry, no more trouble in my way. The door is open for me now forever - my family were all very happy."

Giesy lived in Sweden for a year before moving to Ireland to complete a six-month course with Euro College.

It has been an emotional year for Giesy, as she shared that she lost her mother in February.

She said: “I had to close the shop for two months, because I lost my mother. It was hard – I do the best that I can for my mother.

“She has been to Ireland twice, and she loved it. She loved the green fields, and the animals here. I know she's proud of me.”

Customers at Jessy's Barbers were delighted to hear the news of her citizenship, with Giesy sharing that many regulars gave her cake and flowers to congratulate her.

She said: "The customers were so happy - they were telling me 'well done Jessy - you are Irish!', and I said when you see me next week you will see my Irish flag in my shop, because now I am Irish. They say 'Giesy, I am very happy for you, you deserve it'.

"I want to say thank you to all my loyal customers who have supported my business for ten years. They have grown with me and my kids. Thank you Ireland. I really appreciate all the support."
