Athlone Community Services Council: Social Enterprise of the Year Finalist

The Athlone Community Services Council (ACSC) was set up in 1971 to provide an umbrella organisation that could offer relevant services to those in need in the community. The services ACSC provides include services for older persons, Esker House Domestic Abuse Support Service, childcare services, counselling services and a Community Employment Scheme. The ACSC aims to provide its services in a non-judgemental way in a caring environment and always with respect and dignity.

The services for older persons include chiropody, senior alert, laundry and Meals on Wheels. The aims are to facilitate older persons to have a happy, healthy and independent life at home.

The Esker House Domestic Abuse Support Service provides a refuge for women and children, support and information for those dealing with domestic abuse outside the refuge system, and a child and youth programme. The ACSC also provides training and awareness on domestic abuse to the public, community groups, businesses and local police. There are four childcare centres operated by the ACSC, Clonbrusk Childcare Centre, the Jolly Mariner Childcare Centre, Sarsfield Pre-school and Shannon Pre-school services.

The Community Employment Scheme is designed to provide work experience and training opportunities for job seekers in order to help them enhance their skills and increase their chances of employment.

The ACSC has a new website for its services in order to increase accessibility at: athlonecommunityservicescouncil.com, and websites for its Esker House services (eskerhouse.ie) and childcare services (clonbruskchildcare.com).

The ACSC is located at Dr Dobb’s Memorial Home on Northgate Street, Athlone.

The other Social Enterprise of the Year finalists are: New Horizon Refugee and asylum Seeker Support Group and Athlone Agricultural Show.
