Almost €12.8 million in funding allocated for Westmeath and Roscommon sports clubs
Just under €12.8 million in funding has been allocated to sports clubs across Roscommon and Westmeath in the latest round of Sports Capital Grant allocations announced today
In Westmeath, a total of €7,458,217 was allocated across 50 clubs and organisations. The funds, which were divided into three categories, equipment, regional clubs and local clubs, included €731,070 of funding for equipment previously announced in last May’s equipment grants.
The Westmeath clubs include the Athlone Regional Sports Centre, which was allocated €500,000 for improvements to its swimming pool facility, the Athlone Institute of Technology, given €365,809 to resurface its running track, and the Athlone Squash Club, which got €191,467 in funding.
Among those that received funding for equipment were Westmeath Camogie, allocated €37,246, and the Moate Golf Club, allocated €40,000 for its sustainability project.
The local clubs in Westmeath that will recieve funding include Athlone Boat Club, Midland Warriers RFC, and GAA clubs in Athlone, Ballinahown, Castledaly, Caulry, Garrycastle, Horseleap/Streamstown, Kilbeggan, Maryland, Rosemount, Tang, and Tubberclair.
In Roscommon, a total of €5,334,245 was allocated across 49 clubs and organisation, including €403,445 in equipment funding announced last May.
The Roscommon regional clubs include the Roscommon GAA, granted €383,429 for the provision of toilets and changing room upgrade, and Lisnamult Residents Association, allocated €387,003 for an all-weather athletic track.
Those that received funding for equipment include Hodson Bay Celtic FC, which was allocated €11,220, and Roscommon Town Youth Soccer Club, given €57,685.
The local clubs in Roscommon that will receive funding include Athlone Golf Club, Clann na Gael GAA, Padraig Pearses GAA, Skyvalley Rovers and St Peter's FC.
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke TD has welcomed the allocation of funding to the Westmeath clubs.
He said the funding will be used for improvements to infrastructure such as improving playing and training facilities, astro-turfs, handball alleys, walking tracks, hurling walls, and floodlights.
The minister added, “It is crucial that we invest in sport for the overall health and wellbeing of our population and that is why this programme is so important.
“I thank our volunteer committees for the invaluable contributions they make to our community and look forward to seeing the improvements they make with this funding,” he concluded.
