Athlone native appointed principal of Cornamaddy Community School
Athlone native Yvonne Naughton is the new Principal of Cornamaddy Community National School.
Yvonne grew up in Taughmaconnell, just outside of Athlone. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education from St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra.
She also completed a Postgraduate Diploma School in School Leadership and Management and a Research Masters in School Leadership, both from University College Limerick.
She began her teaching career in a Senior DEIS 1 school in Finglas, Dublin. Yvonne joined Cornamaddy CNS in 2015 and became Deputy Principal in 2020.
Commenting on her appointment, Yvonne said: "It is a great personal honour to have been appointed as the next principal of Cornamaddy Community National School.
"Cornamaddy is a wonderful school community that promotes excellence in education, while nurturing students in an inclusive and respectful manner, and encouraging them to reach their full potential.
"It is an exciting time for Cornamaddy, as we embark on our second year as a Community National School.
"I look forward to continuing to work with our enthusiastic students, dedicated staff, supportive parents, wider community and our patron Longford and Westmeath Education and Training Board.
"Together, we will continue to grow and develop our school and its ethos as a Community National School."
Speaking about what motivates her, Yvonne added: "My passion for teaching and leading is deeply rooted in the belief that every child deserves an inclusive environment that nurtures their potential and fosters success.
"As both an educator and a leader, I am committed to creating a learning space where all students, regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances, feel valued, respected, and empowered. I believe that education has the transformative power to open doors of opportunity, and it is my responsibility to ensure that these doors are accessible to all.
"I am passionate about guiding each student on their individual journey, fostering a sense of belonging, and equipping them with the skills and mindset needed to become lifelong learners."
The Athlone native is taking over as principal from Carmel Garvey, and paid tribute to her predecessor.
"I wish to express my gratitude to Carmel Garvey for her dedicated service and commitment to Cornamaddy CNS over the past number of years and I wish her good health and happiness in her retirement,” Yvonne said.
Cornamaddy last year became Athlone's first multi-denominational national school when it was transferred from its previous Catholic patronage.
Since August 30, 2023, the school has been under the governance of Longford and Westmeath Education and Training Board.
