Brigid's to face Pearses as draw for quarter-finals is made

Reigning champions St Brigid's will face local rivals Pádraig Pearses in what is undoubtedly the standout game in this year's Roscommon SFC quarter-finals.

The draw was made last night (Tuesday) after St Faithleach’s defeated regional outfit North Roscommon in their preliminary quarter-final at Lisnamult.

Clann na nGael will meet St Faithleach’s in their quarter-final and, with the winners to meet St Brigid's or Pearses in the last four, there is a strong possibility of a local derby semi-final between two of the southern powerhouses.

Having topped their group with wins over Pearses, Boyle and St Dominic's, Clann have just cause to be confident that they can overcome St Faithleach’s in the knockout stages.

The other quarter-finals will see last year's defeated finalists Boyle take on Roscommon Gaels, while Oran will face Michael Glaveys.

Dates and times for the quarter-finals have yet to be confirmed, but they are scheduled to be played on the weekend of September 21/22.

The teams who topped their groups - Roscommon Gaels (Group A), St Brigid's (Group B) and Clann na nGael (Group C) - were seeded for the quarter-finals. Oran, who finished second in Group A, were also picked out as a seeded team by the luck of the draw.

As Brigid's had played St Faithleach's and Michael Glaveys in their group fixtures, they could not be drawn against them in the quarter-finals. Therefore, the only two teams the Connacht champions could meet were Pearses or Boyle, and the draw has set up a showdown with the Moore/Taughmaconnell outfit.

The Kiltoom/Cam side defeated Pearses in the 2020 county final while Pearses won the championship the following year, overcoming Clann in the decider, having lifted the Fahey Cup for the first time in 2019. In the last Roscommon SFC meeting between the sides, Brigid's got the better of Pearses in a group game last year.

Meanwhile, St Dominic's have secured senior status for next year by defeating Tulsk Lord Edwards in their relegation play-off. The Knockcroghery based side overcome the Tulsk men on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-5 in Strokestown last night.
