Organisers express delight with Moate Show turnout

A damp and drizzly start to the day failed to curb the enthusiasm of the huge crowds who turned out in force for the 181st Moate Agricultural Show on Sunday last, with organisers saying they were "delighted" with the turnout.

With last year's show being marred by torrential downpours, the rain managed to stay away for much of the day on Sunday and this allowed local and visiting families to enjoy a real community day out with lots of entertainment on offer for all ages.

One of the most talked-about aspects of Sunday's Moate Show was the magnificent display of vegetables in the National Vegetable Society tent, which left visitors "well and truly mesmerised," according to Colin Doyle.

For the second year in a row, Moate Show hosted the Irish Championships of the National Vegetable Society, which has over 2,000 members from Ireland and overseas. The society encourages growers to produce bigger and better quality vegetables by sharing tips, advice and support to all would-be growers.

Another highlight on Sunday last was the jiving competition, which attracted a huge entry and provided great entertainment for the many spectators who gathered to witness the magnificent dancers of all ages in action.

"We are looking to expand this section next year and, of course, we also had Cliona Hagan and the wonderful Sheerin Family Band, who were a huge hit this year as well," said Colin Doyle.

Colin said entries were well up on previous years in all classes, including cattle, sheep and horses, and one of the most encouraging aspect of the entries was the younger age profile of those entering.

"It is great to see the younger generation of exhibitors as they are our patrons of the future," he commented.

The Show Secretary said the committee was also delighted to see the number of local schools who got their pupils involved in preparing artwork for the 181st Show.

"Overall we were delighted once again with the turnout this year," concluded Colin, who expressed his thanks on behalf of the committee to the landowner on whose lands the show took place; as well as the exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers and the patrons who come out every year to support the annual show.
