Film screening this weekend as part of Luan Gallery exhibition outreach

Athlone's Luan Gallery is to host a film screening of 'Chez Jolie Coiffure' by Rosine Mbakam this weekend, followed by a collage-making workshop with an exhibiting artist, Éireann and I’s hairstylist Adesewa Awobadejo.

The public is invited to the viewing of the 'Chez Jolie Coiffure' documentary by Rosine Mbakam as part of the Éireann and I SALON installation. Éireann and I is a collaborative project that sources contextualises and chronicles the experiences of Black migrants in Ireland.

Adesewa Awobadejo is a Nigerian-Irish hairstylist. For her, hairstyling is an expression of art and a form of storytelling, and Rosine Mfetgo Mbakam is a filmmaker who grew up in a traditional family in Cameroon.

'Chez Jolie Coiffure' is a documentary which takes place in Jolie Coiffure, a hair salon in the Matonge district of Brussels run by Cameroonian hairdresser Sabine.

Despite having been in Belgium for almost a decade, Sabine is still awaiting a decision on her asylum application.

The film captures Sabine’s daily life at the salon, where she perfects her craft while talking and laughing with an eclectic cast of patrons and visitors, many of whom also harbour the same fears about deportation.

After viewing the documentary, participants will be invited to respond to it through discussion and collage-making with Adesewa Awobadejo.

This event is part of the outreach programme for Luan Gallery’s current exhibition, 'The Tides of Monumental Gesture', and takes place this Saturday, August 31, from 12pm to 2pm. Admission to the event is free. Booking is essential and can be done directly via phone: 090 644 2154 or email info@luangallery.ie

The event is supported by Creative Ireland and Westmeath Arts office. 'The Tides of Monumental Gesture' group exhibition which is supported by the Arts Council will continue at Luan Gallery until Thursday, September 5.
