Westmeath GAA coaching and games notes

Last week saw the final Cúl Camp of the summer take place in Westmeath, with Southern Gaels hosting 80 enthusiastic hurlers and camogie players from the south of the county. With all the camps concluded, Westmeath GAA wish to thank all our staff, coaches, participants and the different family members who got players to and from the camps for all their efforts over the summer.

Go Games

The young hurlers of the county were in action in U8 and U10 blitzes last Saturday morning. This coming weekend sees football blitzes across ten different venues.

U16 Hurling

Westmeath travel to Abbottstown on Saturday for their final blitz of the year. The team have been drawn to play Kilkenny in a semi-final at 12:00. They will be guaranteed another game at 2:00 against the winners or losers of Laois and Antrim.

U15 Hurling Arrabawn Shield

A trip to Tipp awaits our U15 hurlers on Saturday morning, with Moyle Rovers GAA club hosting the team in the Arrabawn Shield. Westmeath will face Clare at 11:00 in the Shield semi-final and will have either a final or 3rd place playoff at 2:00 against Laois or Meath.

U14 Forristal and Walsh Cups

Two Westmeath teams will travel to Abbottstown on Saturday for the concluding stages of the Forristal and Walsh Cups. The Forristal Cup team will play Kildare in a quarter final and should they win that, face Antrim or Meath in a semi-final. At the times of writing, the times for these games were yet to be confirmed.

The Walsh Cup will operate on a group basis with Westmeath guaranteed two games with teams from Wicklow and Kildare. At the times of writing, the times for these games were yet to be confirmed.

The Westmeath U16 footballers took on Dublin in the Tedd Webb Cup play-off.

U16 Ted Webb Cup 3rd Place Playoff

Westmeath 2-12 Dublin 1-11

Westmeath concluded their Ted Webb Cup on a positive note with a 4-point win over Dublin. Level at half time, Westmeath pushed on in the second half to secure the win. Both sides agreed to play an additional 30-minute game to allow all players get game time, meaning 33 players in total saw action.

U15 Dermot Earley Cups

Michael Glaveys Cup Final: Westmeath 7-23 Tipperary 2-5

Westmeath put in a commanding performance to take the Dermot Earley Michael Glaveys Cup in Portlaoise on Saturday.

Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half, goals from Stephen McWade and Aaron Connaire gave the maroons a healthy 2-12 to 0-3 lead at half time. Despite early Tipp pressure after half-time, the Westmeath lads put the foot down further and extended their lead to win comfortably.

Roscommon Cup 3rd Place Playoff: Wicklow 2-9 Westmeath 0-7

The other half of the Westmeath squad travelled to Blessington to take on the home side on Saturday. The men in maroon put in a spirited display but the home team's goals proved the difference between the teams.

U14 Football Academy

Two Westmeath teams were in action on Saturday in the Centre of Excellence in Portlaoise. One team faced off against familiar opposition in Laois whilst the others took on the challenge of Cork.

All players saw action in each game, with the players on both teams showing signs of gelling together.
