Niko is Nose of Tralee 2024

Pet Sitters Ireland have announced the winners of the 2024 Nose of Tralee competition, the 11th annual celebration of Ireland’s most beloved pets, and this year the coveted title of Nose of Tralee 2024 goes to Niko, a charming dog from Athlone.

Niko is a one-year-old Rottweiler. His owner Cassie, from Athlone, revealed that her partner gifted Niko to her last August when she was going through “a really tough time in life” during recovery from surgery and chemotherapy.

Cassie said: “He is a special dog, one you don't come by very often and one you definitely don't underestimate when you do. He is a gentle giant with a heart of gold and he has shown that to many people.

“Niko has proven that he is worth his weight in gold and more throughout all of this and I think going forward he can show people the same things he has shown me, that life is to be lived.

"To be brave and even when you are scared, do it anyway and most importantly to put yourself out there regardless of what people think of you because if we don't fight, we can't win."

Dougie, a cat from Galway, has made history as the first cat to ever become the runner-up in the contest.

There were 1,650 entries from a diverse array of pets, including dogs, cats, pigs, lizards, birds, and snakes.

Some 75,000 votes were cast to determine the top three pets in each county, after which the judges selected the final 32 contestants, 29 dogs and three cats.

After 47,500 public votes were cast, Niko was crowned the 2024 Nose of Tralee.

Niko’s story is one of resilience and joy, having brought light into his owner’s life following a difficult personal battle.

Known for his love of stealing socks and toilet rolls, Niko’s infectious zest for life and his soulful eyes won the hearts of many.

Runner-up, Dougie, the brave cat from Galway, captured the affection of the public with his tale of survival and dedication. Dougie lost his tail and a leg in an accident as a kitten but was nursed back to health by a rescue team and later found his forever home.

Despite that tough start, Dougie has become an integral part of his owner’s recovery journey, showcasing his gentle nature and unwavering loyalty.

Niko will receive a prize package that includes a €200 pet sitting and dog walking voucher, a professional photo shoot with David McAuley Photography, a canvas image, and a €500 Tesco voucher.

Dougie received a €100 pet sitting and dog walking voucher and a €150 Tesco voucher.
