Roscommon LGFA appoint Egan as new team manager

Roscommon LGFA have turned to the hugely experienced Finbar Egan as the man to take charge of the county's intermediate football team.

Egan was ratified at a Roscommon LGFA board meeting last night (Wednesday) and succeeds Drum native Ollie Lennon in the role.

Having led Clann na nGael to a Connacht club crown in 1995, Egan went on to enjoy considerable success at inter-county level with Mayo. He was involved either as manager or selector/coach during a glorious period which saw Mayo win four All-Ireland senior titles.

A resident of Summerhill, close to Athlone, Egan returned to manage Clann in recent years, guiding them to their first senior championship in 24 years in 2021, alongside joint manager Marie Kelly.

Clann retained the title in 2022 but were denied a three-in-a-row when Boyle claimed a surprise victory in last year's final.

In a statement, Roscommon LGFA said it was "delighted" to announce the appointment of Egan as the county's new manager.

"Finbar has a wealth of knowledge and experience of coaching and managing across numerous age grades and levels. We would like to wish Finbar and his incoming management team the very best of luck for the coming season and beyond," said the statement.

Roscommon lost out to Connacht rivals Leitrim in this year's All-Ireland intermediate championship quarter-finals.

Egan is also a former manager of Athlone and Maryland, guiding the Drumraney club to Westmeath intermediate championship success in 2008.

Finbar is a director of financial advisory company, Claffey & Egan Financial Brokers, alongside another familiar football figure, former Doon and Offaly star Vinny Claffey.
