Coosan cemetery rapidly ‘running out of space’

A claim that Coosan cemetery “is down to the last three rows” was made by Cllr Kevin “Boxer” Moran at the most recent meeting of Westmeath County Council.

Pleading to have the cemetery extended, he said it's been four years since concerns were raised about capacity at the cemetery.

“There's huge concern in the area,” he said. “What would the council's vision be on extending that graveyard?”

County CEO Barry Kehoe said the local authority was aware of the urgency of the situation, and he said the Athlone Municipal District staff were working on a resolution at present.

He said there are negotiations underway on a possible extension and also on an alternative.
