Athlone artist Emer set to open exhibition this Friday evening

Athlone teacher and talented artist Emer Gaffey is preparing to exhibit a collection of her work in her home town this Friday evening, July 26.

Emer's exhibition is entitled Roots and Reflections, and it will have an opening reception in Athlone Art Gallery on Friday at 6pm. The gallery is based in The Village at Burgess department store on Lloyd’s Lane, Athlone.

Cllr Aengus O’Rourke will open the exhibition this Friday night. The exhibition will run until the end of August, giving local art enthusiasts and those from further afield ample opportunity to check out Emer’s work.

Emer holds a degree in printmaking from Limerick School of Art and Design. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in her local environment, drawing inspiration from the boglands, rivers and fields that surround her, as well as the rich ancestral ties that connect her to this landscape through generations past.

Through drawing, painting, print and mixed media, Emer’s work translates the essences of her environment into visual narratives that capture the textures, colours and stories of the natural surroundings.

Through her work, she explores the layers of history and memory embedded in the land, paying homage to those who came before her and the enduring legacy they have left behind.

Emer's art invites viewers to contemplate the intricate relationship between place, heritage and personal identity, offering a glimpse into the interconnectedness between the artist, her environment, and the stories that have shaped both.

Work will be available for purchase during the exhibition. In addition, Emer will be raffling off limited edition giclée fine art prints on Friday night in aid of South Westmeath Hospice.

A teacher in Moate Community School, Emer is married to John Gaffey, who is well known for his football prowess with Garrycastle and Westmeath over the years, and the couple have three children, Stephen, Emily and Conor.
