Troy confirmed as Westmeath FF general election candidate

As expected, the Fianna Fail organisation in Westmeath has confirmed the selection sitting TD, Robert Troy, as their sole candidate in the county for the next general election.

Deputy Troy was unopposed when his name was put forward at the party's selection convention in Bloomfield House Hotel, Mullingar last night (Monday).

The convention, which was held for the Westmeath side of the five-seat Longford-Westmeath consituency, was chaired by Junior Transport Minister, James Lawless.

Athlone-based party councillor, Aengus O'Rourke, had put his name forward for the Westmeath convention, but withdrew it when party headquarters decided to opt for a two-candidate strategy.

Sitting TD on the Longford side of the constituency, Joe Flaherty, is expected to be ratified at a convention in the coming weeks.

Robert Troy, who is a native of Ballynacargy, has represented the people of Longford- Westmeath since his election to Dáil Éireann on his first attempt in 2011. He successfully retained his seat for the party in both the 2016 and 2020 general elections.
