Part of Tánaiste's Kenya visit cancelled after nine bodies discovered, serial killer arrested

The Tánaiste has described the discovery of the bodies of nine women in the same area as an Irish Aid-funded health clinic in Kenya as shocking.

A man in his 30s - suspected of being a serial killer - has been arrested, after the women's mutilated remains were found in a quarry near the clinic in the Mukuru township.

Plans for Tánaiste Micheál Martin to visit the clinic while in Kenya this morning have been cancelled.

Mr Martin said many women would use the clinic, making the killings even more upsetting.

"I think we have to await further details and background to this, but it's quite shocking. One of the strongest contributions we make through our development humanitarian aid is to support women, and young girls in particular.

"Very often in the context of conflict and war, but also in other aspects of women's health."
