The late Fr Larney Shine.

South Roscommon mourns passing of popular local priest

The funeral has taken place of Fr Larney Shine, a native of Clonown, who passed away earlier this week.

Rev. Larney Shine C.S.Sp. (Kimmage Manor, Dublin and late of Curnaboll, Clonown) died peacefully in the tender care of Nazareth House Nursing Home on Monday, July 8.

He had only recently marked the 60th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on July 5, 1964.

Fr Shine spent some 38 years on the missions in Kenya, before returning to Ireland in 2002. He later initially worked as a chaplain at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, before serving as a curate in Kilgefin (Ballyleague), Derrane, Kilmurry and Tulsk parishes.

He retired from active parish work in 2019, and returned to the Holy Ghost Fathers headquarters in Dublin.

Fr Shine was son of the late Delia (née Fallon) and Laurence Shine. He was predeceased by his siblings Mary, Tommy, Michael, Nancy (Ward), Johnny, Kathleen and Willie, and his niece Norma Shine. Deeply regretted by his sister-in-law Bridie, his nieces, nephew, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and extended family, his many friends, fellow Spiritans and the parishioners he loyally served.

His Funeral Mass took place today (Friday) in the Holy Spirit Parish Church, Kimmage Manor followed by burial in Clonown Cemetery this afternoon.
