Westmeath GAA Chairman Frank Mescall noted the significance of the planned development in Southern Gaels.

Development plans at three Westmeath GAA clubs

Three Westmeath clubs secured permission to purchase land for development at a meeting of Westmeath GAA County Committee on July 4.

The most significant is that of the Southern Gaels hurling club, who are planning to purchase 13 acres on the outskirts of Athlone to develop a full-size pitch, a second pitch which overtime will be full-size. They have backing from local donors for the project and the club was wished well with the development plans.

Tang are purchasing 6.73 acres and as part of their plans, four acres which they currently purchased will be swapped with the land owner.

“They are swapping and getting extra, which makes it more convenient and better for them,” Patrick Doherty advised.

Ballycomoyle have gained approval to purchase four acres of land adjacent to their current ground. They have been approved for a loan under the GAA development fund which will go towards the development.

County Committee Chairman Frank Mescall wished all clubs well, but noted the significance of the Southern Gaels’ plans.

“There must be something in the air this weather with land and purchases, but it’s great to see. Not to take away from Tang or Ballycomoyle, but I’m relieved to hear of the purchase by Southern Gaels. It’s really significant and everyone in the room will wish you well with it,” he said.

He also wished all involved with the planned projects in Tang and Ballycomoyle the best of luck.
