Quigley's Marina in Glasson collaborates with 'Think Before You Flush' campaign

Quigley's Marina in Glasson is involved in a collaboration with the 'Think Before You Flush' campaign and the Blue Flag programme, with the goal of educating people about what should and should not be flushed down public toilets.

The collaboration began in 2023, and has continued this year, with the goal of keeping Ireland's Blue Flag beaches and marinas clean and tidy and protecting our marine habitats from sewage-based pollution.

Quigley's, at Killinure Point, Glasson, has long maintained its Blue Flag Marina status, picking up this accolade for the 21st time earlier this year.

The 'Think Before You Flush' campaign, operated by Clean Coasts in partnership with Uisce Éireann, emphasises the importance of appropriate flushing behaviour and disposal of items including wipes and other sanitary products, even if they are labelled as flushable.

It emphasises that only the '3 Ps' - pee, poo and paper - should be flushed down the toilet, everything else should go in the bin.

When items such as wipes and sanitary products are flushed down the toilet, they can cause serious blockages in waste water systems, resulting in sewage overflows which can pollute our rivers, lakes, beaches and coastlines.

Recognising the need to protect Ireland's coastal ecosystems, Quigleys Marina has united in its commitment to spread awareness about the campaign and promote responsible waste disposal practices.

Under this collaborative effort, participating authorities display 'Think Before You Flush' signage on Blue Flag Beaches and marinas, offering clear instructions on appropriate flushing behaviour, highlighting the main items people incorrectly flush down their toilets, and encouraging visitors to use designated sanitary waste bins.

"It's fantastic to see Quigley's Marina supporting the 'Think Before You Flush' campaign," said Bronagh Moore, Coastal Communities Manager at Clean Coasts.

"These types of collaborations between local businesses and environmental programmes are crucial in safeguarding our freshwater habitats. Their efforts and ongoing commitment to protecting the environment will help ensure a vibrant ecosystem for future generations to enjoy."
