Entries sought for Westmeath Independent Community and Sports Awards

The Westmeath Independent Community and Sports Awards 2024, in partnership with Westmeath County Council, were officially launched recently, at a ceremony in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, attended by representatives of the newspaper, sponsors and the hotel.

The new awards are designed to acknowledge the work done by individuals, groups and sporting clubs in our community, and everyone is invited to nominate those they think are deserving.

The launch was addressed by Frank Mulrennan, Chief Executive of Celtic Media, the parent company of Westmeath Independent, who welcomed those in attendance and spoke of the newspaper's long immersion in the local community in this area, dating back to its foundation in 1846. He thanked Mary McGuigan, Group Marketing Consultant, Celtic Media, for her work in developing the awards.

Sports editor Kieran Galvin outlined the four sports categories, listed below. He thanked partners, Westmeath County Council, and sponsors Action Physio, Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union, Byrne Carolan Cunningham LLP Solicitors and Specsavers Athlone, and encouraged all to spread the word of the nomination process for the awards.

People can enter online or alternatively nominate others across eight categories.

Editor Tadhg Carey explained the four community categories. He said it was fitting that the county's premier body, Westmeath County Council, was partnering with the newspaper in the new awards format.

He said whilst community and sport may appear not to have a lot in common, he said at the bedrock of both was the volunteer, someone who gave of their time to unite people and to bring communities together – something he said was more and more important in the polarised and fractured world we live in.

Nominations are now open for the Westmeath Independent Community and Sports Awards.
