Gardaí remember colleague Staci, RIP, at golf fundraiser
Longford Westmeath Garda Golf Society Play in Pink Golf Classic for Breast Cancer Ireland
The Longford Westmeath Garda Golf Society hosted a Golf Classic for Breast Cancer Ireland on June 24 and 25 at Athlone Golf Club in memory of their colleague Staci Daly (neé Wykes) who passed away last September 7. Originally planned as a one-day event on June 25, such was the demand that the organisers had to bring it forward to the day before and golfers teed off on Monday 24th at 1pm.
A windy but nevertheless beautiful sunny afternoon made it difficult for the Monday players and scores reflected that. On Tuesday, teams of four teed off from 8am in the scramble better ball format. The weather was perfect for golf, with little to no wind and lots of sunshine. The course was in fantastic condition and by time they got to the tricky Par 4 13th hole, rest was needed, and they were treated to some nourishment, sponsored by Supermac’s.
After their rounds, golfers had the opportunity to enter the raffle for sponsored prizes and to enjoy the refreshments available at Athlone Golf Club.
In total 58 teams from all over the country entered and they proudly played in Pink in memory of Staci and to raise funds for Breast Cancer Ireland.
After some great fun on and off the golf course, the raffle was held and first prize, a stay with golf at the Fota Island Resort, won by Evelyn Wright.
The prize ceremony was interesting as the top two teams finished on the same score and the winners, Rationel Windows, pipped Eddie Egan’s Team on a countback.
Third went to Conor Murphy’s Team, who were just 0.1 off the winning score. Conor is a serving garda in Athlone and his team had the lowest score of the garda teams that entered.
The event was a huge success and surpassed all expectations. In total it raised more than €20,000 for breast Cancer Ireland. The day gave all involved an opportunity to come together and celebrate Staci’s life and support Longford Westmeath Garda Golf Society member Cathal and Staci’s family during a difficult time.
"We the organisers want to thank everyone who helped with the event, all our sponsors who gave so generously, sponsoring tee boxes and giving prizes, without such generosity we couldn’t have held the event," said Sgt Brian Stone on behalf of the committee.
Cathal and Staci’s family were extremely grateful to everyone who took part and supported the golf classic through giving of time, sponsorship and prizes. Cathal also thanked the organisers of the event who included his colleagues, society members, friends and friends of Staci.
