A seminar and discussion on the Roscommon Field Names Project will take place in Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon town, this Friday.

Public talk in Roscommon this Friday on county’s field names project

A public seminar and discussion will be held at Hannon's Hotel in Roscommon town this Friday (July 5) as part of the Roscommon Field Names Project.

The event will take place from 10am to 1.30pm and is geared toward anyone interested in finding out more about place names and field names.

Tomás Ó’Móráin will give a talk on ‘Placenames, Field names, Logainm and more’.

Tomás will define the word ‘logainm’ - he will explain how places got the name they have and give an overview of place names nationwide and local parish names.

He has been involved in teaching at primary, secondary and third level over the years, while providing lectures to University students and trainee teachers.

He has spoken recently in the county and this event will afford an opportunity for further discussion on local place names and field names.

This will be followed by a ‘Recording Field Names Workshop and Discussion’ facilitated by Rita Kearney from Kearney Consultants & Trainers.

This is a great opportunity for people to share their experience in how they went about recording field names, what worked well and what didn’t. It will allow for sharing of experiences, information and learning from one volunteer recorder to another.

This event is aimed at people who are already recording or who are thinking about starting to record their local fieldnames.

It is suitable for everybody, individuals who might like to document the field names on their family farm to community groups who might like to record a bigger area. Anyone can get involved. Every field name recorded is a valuable record of a little known part of our heritage that is in danger of being lost.

All are welcome to attend. This event is free but booking is required by phone on 090 6637136 or by email to heritage@roscommoncoco.ie. A light lunch will be provided. Please email heritage@roscommoncoco.ie to reserve your place.

This project is supported by the Heritage Council as an action of the County Roscommon Heritage Plan.

Since the Roscommon Field Names Project started in 2023, maps of over 60 townlands have been supplied to volunteer recorders all around the county.

There is fantastic work being done by volunteers around the county recording fieldnames on their farm or in their locality. To see if any names have been recorded in your area, check out: meitheal.logainm.ie/en/
