Club scene ramps up with league finals

The focus is now turning swiftly to the GAA club scene in Westmeath, with details of the fixtures for the opening rounds of the county football and hurling championships published.

However, before the championships get underway in July, there is the not so small matter of the football league finals, scheduled from Friday to Tuesday next.

Of particular local interest is the clash between Garrycastle and Caulry in the Division Two final on Sunday in TEG Cusack Park (throw in at 5.15pm). After relegation to the intermediate championship, Garrycastle will be hoping to kickstart their bid for automatic promotion with the boost of a league final victory. However, Caulry have been on an upward curve in recent years and will be eyeing some silverware.

Ballymore contest the Division 6 final on Monday, throw in 7.30pm against Multyfarnham, while St Joseph's meet Tyrrellspass in the Division 7 decider on Tuesday, also at 7.30pm.

The top flight final sees St Loman's meet Coralstown Kinnegad at 7pm on Sunday.

The hurling league finals are scheduled for the following weekend, July 5 and 6.

Meanwhile, the Westmeath adult football championships get underway on the weekend of July 18-21.

At Senior Section A level, the curtain raiser is Athlone against St Loman's, Mullingar, on Friday night, July 19 at 7.30pm in TEG Cusack Park. Also in Senior Section A, Tang meet Coralstown Kinnegad in Moate on Sunday, July 21, at 7.30pm

In Senior Section B, the local sides will begin their campaign on Saturday, July 20 with Caulry facing Tyrrellspass at 5.15pm in Cusack Park, followed by Moate All Whites v The Downs at 7pm.

Garrycastle start their campaign in the intermediate ranks against Milltownpass on Saturday, July 20 in Section A, at 5.15pm in Rochforbridge, followed by Tubberclair v Milltown at 7pm.

The main South Westmeath focus in the Intermediate Section A will be on the clash of neighbours Rosemount and Castledaly at 5.45pm on Sunday, July 21.

Ballymore and Maryland feature in the Intermediate Section B.

The former start with a fixture against Multyfarnham in Kinnegad at 7pm on Saturday, July 20, whilst the latter meet St Mary's Rochfortbridge in Moate on Sunday, July 21, at 5.45pm

The senior hurling championship begins on the weekend of July 12 to July 14.

Fr Daltons play Crookedwood in the Senior B round 1 at 7.30pm in Rochfortbridge on Saturday, July 13, whilst Southern Gaels and Turin meet in Ballymore, at 7.30pm the same day in the Intermediate round 1.
