Person treated for smoke inhalation after fire at Athlone house

A person was treated for smoke inhalation this afternoon (Friday) after a mattress went on fire in a rear upstairs bedroom of a house in Athlone.

The fire at the property was reported to the Athlone Fire Service shortly after 2pm today.

When the fire service arrived, all of the occupants were out of the house. First aid was administered to one person, who was given oxygen due to smoke inhalation.

The Athlone Fire Service was joined at the scene by a unit from the Ballinasloe Fire Service, as well as the Gardai, and the incident resulted in traffic delays around the Golden Island area for a time this afternoon.

According to the Athlone Fire Service, the blaze was confined to the upstairs rear bedroom.

It was brought under control, and the local firefighters were back at their base by 3.25pm.
