Laurence Fallon (Non-Party), Athlone - Roscommon

We sent a questionnaire to all 10 candidates running in the Athlone Electoral Area in the forthcoming Roscommon County Council election. The responses are published in print in this week's Westmeath Independent.

NAME: Laurence Fallon

ADDRESS: Ballagh, Knockcroghery.

PARTY: Non-Party

SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST:

Community development is at the heart of all my work as a councillor. I have worked tirelessly to support the regeneration of towns and villages throughout South Roscommon, and have worked with community groups to access funding for local projects.

I have also worked closely with farmers to reduce the level of bureaucracy and ensure a fair income.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING IN THIS ELECTION?

I am committed to continue working to find a solution for the communities affected by the flooding at Lough Funshinagh. If re-elected, I will continue to work with the community, the council and the OPW to ensure we find a solution.

WHAT ARE THE TWO BIGGEST ISSUES IN YOUR AREA?

Undoubtedly Lough Funshinagh is the single biggest emergency facing the area and urgent action is needed to lower the water level before next winter. Housing is a huge issue and there is a need to end the policy of discouraging one-off rural housing.

Everyone should have the right to build a home in the area they were born.

WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

My wife Bernie. It would be impossible to work as a public representative without a supportive partner, and she keeps the show on the road on a daily basis.

TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU:

I once performed the official opening of a sauna in Helsinki in my then-role as President of the European Council of Young Farmers.
