Athlone's Benny still going strong after 60 years
Athlone Boat Club recently paid tribute to long serving and hugely popular stalwart Benny Dunne, who has been rowing with the club for a remarkable 60 years.
Having rowed with the club since he was a young student in the Marist College, Benny still regularly takes to the water and has represented the Athlone club on several occasions in masters competitions over recent years.
In addition to his prowess as an oarsman, Benny has served the club in a variety of capacities, including as president and public relations officer.
The club marked Benny's lengthy involvement at its impressive clubhouse located on the banks of the river Shannon recently.
"Our Benny - some service to Athlone Boat Club and many more to go! Inspiring for the next generation to see," the club said in a Facebook post regarding Dunne's 60 years of involvement.
Several club members offered words of congratulations to Benny, with many people praising his kindness, support and coaching guidance over the years.
"Massive congratulations Benny. Outstanding service to your sport, your club and your fellow oarsmen, present & past," said former Athlone Boat Club Nick Friel president.
Veteran competitor and current committee member Paul Gallen - who has competed alongside Benny many times - described his colleague as "an inspirational oarsman" and a "true gentleman".
Benny is also a member of Athlone Golf Club, and he has a deep interest in a wide range of sports, including soccer and Gaelic games.
