Local Independent candidate calls for additional bus service for Moate
Independent candidate for the upcoming local elections on June 7, Michael O’Brien, has said there's a pressing need for enhanced public transport services in Moate and surrounding areas.
Recognising the challenges faced by residents due to insufficient transportation options, Mr O’Brien is advocating for the implementation of additional bus services by Transport for Ireland.
Throughout his campaign, Mr O’Brien said he had been attentive to the concerns of the community, with the lack of adequate public transport being a recurring issue raised by constituents.
He highlighted that despite some existing services, the current transportation infrastructure is inadequate compared to decades past.
Expressing his vision for a revamped local transport system, he proposed a dedicated bus service for Moate, with stops at key locations within the town and connections to essential facilities such as Tullamore Hospital and the primary care centre in Athlone.
Additionally, he underscored the importance of providing transportation to Moate Business College, addressing the needs of students and staff alike.
Highlighting the sentiments echoed by many locals, Mr O’Brien lamented the decline in transportation options over the years, citing the closure of the train station in 1987, a huge reduction in taxis, and inadequate bus routes.
He emphasised that despite the town's growing population, accessibility to essential services and amenities has regressed, impacting both residents and the local economy. In response to these challenges, Mr O’Brien called upon Transport for Ireland to implement additional bus services akin to the successful A1 and A2 routes in Athlone.
Furthermore, he pledged that if elected to Westmeath County Council, he said he would prioritise the enhancement of public transport services as a key objective.
