Local school competes in Applied Maths problem solving competition

Moate Community School's Junior Maths team had a great end to the academic year as they placed third in the country in the Irish Applied Maths Teachers Association Junior Problem Solving Competition recently.

The team, comprised of Fionn Campbell (TY), Emma Keane (TY), Fionn Murphy (3rd) and Gavin Quilty (3rd) had a stellar year this year. In early January, they competed in the Midlands Regional IAMTA Junior Problem Solving Competition. A fantastic performance saw them crowned Midlands champions and earned them a place in the national final.

The final consisted of teams from all across the country coming together in Athlone to face off for the crown of national champion. A tight battle saw the lead change hands numerous times over the course of the contest.

Eventually when the dust had settled, Moate emerged in joint seond place, only one answer behind the winning team.

With three teams tied second, a tiebreaker was needed to separate them.

MCS came out in third place over all, a fantastic achievement for the four students involved.
