World Wetlands Day set to be marked in Ballydangan with unique event

World Wetlands Day on Friday next, February 2, will be marked in Ballydangan in South Roscommon with a special educational event.

'Farmers of Ballydangan Bog' community gathering takes place from 2pm to 4pm on Ballydangan bog.

During the event attendees will hear from local farmers and community groups protecting nature in the area. These include the FarmPEAT Project, the Ballydangan Bog Red Grouse Project, and the Uí Máine Kingdom Project who are highlighting the uniqueness of the karst landscape in South Roscommon.

FarmPEAT (Farm Payments for Ecological and Agricultural Transitions) project centres on developing a locally-led, innovative, results-based farm scheme for farmers who manage lands that surround some of Ireland's finest remaining raised bogs.

Working with local farmers in Roscommon, Offaly and Westmeath, the project is designing and trialling a programme especially adapted to the local landscape that will incentivise the delivery of enhanced environmental outcomes.

By getting out in the fresh air and spending time on the bog you'll learn about farming with peat soils, red grouse conservation, the lowland karst landscape, and the sharing of folklore through art.

It will be an unique opportunity to learn about the area's landscape, and build new connections with the area and each other. All are welcome, farmers especially!

Admission is free, but you do need to book your place via the Eventbrite website.
