Setting the record straight on Thomas Flynn and the Victoria Cross

Historian and Westmeath Independent columnist Gearoid O'Brien will present January's lecture at the Old Athlone Society tonight.

Gearoid's talk is entitled ''Thomas Flynn V.C. - Setting the Record Straight' and it will commence at 8.15pm in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel.

Gearoid O’Brien, is a Past President of this society. He is a retired librarian and the author of over a dozen books, mainly on aspects of the history of Athlone and its environs. His ‘Athlone Miscellany’ column in the Westmeath Independent has been running for 34 years.

His illustrated talk ‘Thomas Flynn V.C. - Setting the Record Straight’ is the result of over a year’s research into the life and times of Thomas Flynn, a native of Athlone who was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery during the Indian Mutiny. Much of what has been written about Thomas Flynn in the past was incorrect.
