The Athlone Community College panel celebrate their Leinster Schools Senior Girls Cup final win over Gorey CS, alongside Edel Menton (coach).

Athlone CC learn semi-final opponents after Leinster triumph

Two goals from the outstanding Hazel Donegan helped Athlone Community College claim the Leinster Schools Senior Girls Cup at the expense of Gorey Community School at Wayside Celtic FC on Monday last.

Donegan opened the scoring in Monday's Leinster soccer final with just over a minute gone on the clock, when she superbly fired a shot to the roof of the Gorey CS net.

Just two minutes into the second half, Donegan struck again to put Athlone CC 2-0 up. The Ireland U-17 international unleashed a powerful shot that rattled the underside of the crossbar and crept over the line.

Donegan impressed throughout and she had excellent support from the likes of Ciara Walsh and Alison Nugent.

In a match played amid very windy conditions, Edel Menton's charges kept the Wexford side at bay for the remainder, paving the way for team captain Tara O’Sullivan to be presented with the Leinster trophy.

And Athlone CC will now meet Presentation SS, Thurles in the National Cup semi-final on Thursday, February 1. The venue for the semi-final has yet to be confirmed.

Presentation SS, Thurles defeated Laurel Hill Coláiste, Limerick in the Munster final on a 3-0 scoreline, played in Tipperary town today (Wednesday). Just two days previously, Presenation SS defeated their neighbors Ursuline SS, Thurles in their Munster semi-final.
