Athlone Town claim victory in first outing of 2024

Athlone Town's first competitive match of 2024 ended in an away victory over Maynooth University Town in the Leinster Senior Cup last night (Monday).

Maynooth scored first and led 1-0 at half-time but goals from Dean Ebbe (a penalty), Dylan Gavin and Shane Forbes ultimately secured a 3-2 win for Athlone.

The Kildare outfit went 2-1 up after Athlone's first equaliser but Athlone native Gavin brought the visitors level, before Forbes struck for the winner.

Athlone also recently hosted FAI Cup holders St Patrick's Athletic in a pre-season friendly, which resulted in a 1-0 win for the Inchicore outfit.

The Town will begin their 2024 SSE Airtricity First Division campaign with a home match against Wexford on Friday, February 16.

The aforementioned Ebbe is among Athlone's most recent signings along with Jarlath Jones, Gabriel Padilla and Roscoe Rubinstein.
