Athlone students complete clean up of local waterways
Students from the Dean Kelly NS recently completely a very successful clean up of Athlone's waterways.
The young pupils, who are taking part in the Green Schools Programme, are bidding for their second flag for the westside primary school.
This year's theme is water, and fittingly, the youngsters wanted to do a litter pick along the town's waterways.
Pupils set off on the day from the school, up through the Batteries, down by the Athlone Canal, past the Planet entertainment centre and down by the banks of the River Shannon.
The pupils collected several bags of rubbish dumped along the waterways, which they noticed had been there for a long time and wasn't being cleaned up.
The pupils felt a great sense of pride and achievement amongst themselves after making a great contribution to the Athlone community on the west side of the town.
