Athlone Film Club to show Tunisian movie Harka

Athlone Film Club returns to the Dean Crowe Theatre next Tuesday evening, January 16 with the Tunisian film Harka.

The film Harka tells us the story of Ali, a young Tunisian dreaming of a better life. He makes a precarious living selling contraband gas at the local black market.

When Ali's father suddenly dies, he is forced to take charge of his two younger sisters and their impending eviction. What ensues is a fight for dignity, as we hear the voice of a generation trying to be heard more than a decade after the revolution. This is a modern-day parable about resistance.

Directed by Lofty Nathan, the film won awards at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Red Sea International Film Festival in 2022. French-Tunisian actor Adam Bessa, who was hailed for an "extraordinary" performance in Harka, was an award winner at both festivals.

The New Internationalist described Harka as “grounded, gritty, tense” and “an unforgettable film”.

Doors open at the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone on Tuesday, January 16 at 7.30pm and the film starts at 8pm. Language is Arabic with English subtitles and the running time is 87 minutes. Entry is €10 per film, cash only please.

Athlone Film Club wishes all patrons a happy new year and give thanks for their continued support.
