WATCH: Athlone No 1 Gun Battery Heritage Group provides update on restoration works

The Athlone No 1 Gun Battery Heritage Group have released an informative video detailing their conservation works at the last surviving example of the 8 Gun Batteries built in Athlone.

The gun batteries were originally built in 1805 to defend against a possible invasion and works began to uncover the battery and to clear vegetation in 2020.

During the works, a metal detection survey discovered musket balls, a mini ball, Lee Enfield rifle bullets, an Óglaigh na h-Éireann (Defence Forces) Fianna Fáíl cap badge and a Queen Victoria uniform button.

The works were funded by the The Heritage Council under their Community Grant Scheme and the Historic Structures Fund Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and with consent from National Monuments Service - Archaeology.
