Man receives slash wound to face in overnight assault

Gardai are investigating an overnight attack in Athlone during which a man in his 20s received a slash wound to the face.

The incident happened at a housing estate on the east side of the town around 1.25am after the victim answered the door to a male caller.

Gardai are investigating the circumstances of the incident, and at this stage are unaware of any specific motivation for the attack.

Gardai say the victim received a large wound to the side of his face, having been assaulted with an implement of some sort. He was brought immediately to the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, for treatment.

Gardai say they are following a definite line of enquiry.
