Athlone club seeks volunteers as men’s team returns to national league
Athlone Basketball Club is seeking new volunteers to join the club as it gears up for the senior men's team to enter the national league for the first time in some 40 years.
Club Chairman Ciaran Kiveney said that it was “absolutely fantastic” that the club is entering the national league and highlighted that the club has grown “massively” since the Covid-19 pandemic.
The club had between 100/120 members a few years ago but now boasts over 300 members which further highlights the need for more people to join the club to help with the huge rise of interest.
Mr Kiveney said that the club has entered the Midlands and Longford Laois Roscommon (LLR) leagues in recent years and reached the top two or three every season in these leagues. He also highlighted that Davie Keogh is back coaching at the club this year.
“We are in the process of the first stage of building a club gym,” added Mr Kiveney. He said that they are hoping to have a gym built within the next five or six years.
The basketball club chairman said that many former members have returned to the club after seeing the recent growth of the club amid future development plans.
Arcadia Athlone is Athlone Basketball Club's main sponsor and the club is grateful for their support which helps to provide the club with new sports gear.
