Speed ramps to be installed near Dún na Sí in Moate

Two ramps are to be installed by the council on Lake Road in Moate in order to slow traffic on the approach to Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park.

"We have the intention of delivering these ramps sooner rather than later," District Engineer Willie Ryan told the October meeting of the Athlone Moate Municipal District.

He added that the ramps would be "under good-quality lights" and would be accompanied by the statutory signage.

One of the two ramps on Lake Road will be close to the entrance to the Gleann Duchais housing estate, but Mr Ryan said the primary intention was to "slow traffic on the approach to Dun na Sí".

Cllr Vinny McCormack spoke about the "heavily trafficked" nature of the area around Dún na Sí, saying it was used by many families and cyclists coming to or from the Old Rail Trail cycleway.

"Anything we can do to reduce traffic speeds there is welcome," he said.

Cllr Tom Farrell added that vehicles were "absolutely flying" on the Mount Temple road, on the approach to the 'Teach Ceoil' Comhaltas centre in Dún na Sí, and he suggested that the council should undertake a speed survey on this section of road also.
