Motorcyclist dies in fourth fatal accident in less than 24 hours

Two pedestrians and young male in his 20's dead in other separate incidents.

A motorcyclist had died following a road traffic colision in Donegal this afternoon.

Gardaí and Emergency Services attended the scene on the R262 near Glenties shortly before 4pm on Sunday, October 8.

The motorcyclist, a male in his late 40s, received medical treatment at the scene but was pronounced deceased a short time later.

The road is currently closed to traffic and local diversions are in place on the R262 between Kilraine and Frosses. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested to examine the scene and a report will be sent to the local Coroner

Elsewhere a teenage pedestrian, a young male driver, and a pedestrian on a motorway in Louth lost their lives in separate road traffic accidents overnight.

Gardaí this morning attended a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Scrine Hill, Scrine, Co. Roscommon in the early hours of this morning, Sunday, October 8.

At approximately 2.50am Gardaí were alerted to collision where they found the male driver, aged early 20s, fatally injured when the car he was driving overturned.

A post mortem will take place in due course, and the scene of the collision is currently preserved for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators (FCI).

The road remains closed and local diversions are in place.

Around the same time, although in Louth, gardaí were being called to the scene of an accident at Junction 16 southbound on the M1 motorway near Dundalk where a male pedestrian, aged in his 40s, was fatally injured when struck by a vehicle.

A post mortem will take place in due course.

The male driver, aged in his early 50s, and his three passengers (aged 50s and 40s) were attended to by ambulance personnel at the scene for non-life threatening injuries.

Yesterday evening meanwhile (Saturday, October 7), at approximately 9.50pm Gardaí attended the scene where a male pedestrian, aged in his late teens, was seriously injured on the R555 at Duagh Village, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

The boy was taken from the scene to Kerry University Hospital but he later passed away.

A post mortem will take place in due course.

The female driver of the car, aged in her early 20s, and her three passengers (all in their later teens) were uninjured.

The scene of the collision is currently preserved for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators (FCI).  The road remains closed and local diversions are in place.

In both cases local gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Before the weekend, as of 9am on October 6, there had been 139 deaths on Irish roads to date in 2023.

That includes 34 pedestrians, 34 drivers, 31 passengers, 3 e-scooter users, 18 motorcyclists, 4 pedal cyclists, and one pillion passenger.

By comparison there were 113 deaths on Irish roads for the same period last year.
