Irish Second-Level Students’ Union to hold annual Regional Council event in Athlone

The Irish Second-Level Students’ Union (ISSU) is set to hold its annual Regional Council for Longford and Westmeath in TUS Athlone on Thursday, October 12. This event is an opportunity for every school in the two counties to get together for a day of panel discussions and events.

The Irish Second-Level Students’ Union is the national representative body for second-level student councils in the Republic of Ireland and it currently has 20 member schools in the area.

Last year's event was a great success with several local TD’s and councillors attending on the day. Organisations such as Conradh na Gaeilge also provided workshops and support. Nearly 60% of Longford-Westmeath schools attended the event last year, which was the most successful event ever. This year the organisers say they aim to get as close to 100% attending as possible.

Workshops and events are not the only activities that will take place on the day, with elections for the position of Regional Officer also being held. The two Regional Officers for Longford-Westmeath work to coordinate the activities of the union in the region and the role offers many opportunities to meaningfully engage with local schools, politicians, and organisations.

The current Regional Officers are Sam Brooks (a former student of Athlone Community College) and Gearoid McCarthy (a 5th Year student in Marist College). They are urging students to engage with their school's student council in order to get as many schools and as many students engaged with the union as possible.

Any school, student, organisation, or politician who wishes to get involved is invited to contact the group at longfordwestmeath@issu.ie
