Mart accident victim named locally

The local man who died following a tragic accident at a cattle mart in Loughrea at the weekend, has been named locally as Michael (Mike) McLoughlin, a cattle dealer, farmer and haulier from Coolegarry, Curraghboy in South Roscommon.

Mr McLoughlin was injured following an incident on Saturday evening (September 23) at approximately 4.25pm as the mart in the Galway town was in progress.

He was taken by ambulance to UHG in Galway where he was later pronounced dead.

Local Cllr Tony Ward, who lives close by, extended his condolences to the McLoughlin family on the sad loss of a well liked and very kind man.

“The whole village of Curraghboy and surrounding areas is in shock. He was a farmer and haulier for years. People are in deep shock at the tragic loss of a man at a young age. He was only in his early 60s,” he remarked.

“Mike was a well liked, obliging, friendly and outgoing. He was as honest as the day was long. Young and old liked Mike.

“The whole community is just stunned. It was by all accounts a freak accident, and it is so, so sad for his family,” he added.

A large number of condolences on rip.ie from people all over the country remembered Mike as a gentleman, a character who loved a chat and a laugh, and was full of the joys of life.

The HSA and the coroner have been notified of his death.

Gardaí in Loughrea are also investigating the tragic incident.

Predeceased by his parents James and Bridie and sister-in-law Bernie. He is sadly missed by his, twin brother John, sisters Mary, Anne, Bernie and Carmel,  brothers-in-law, Kevin and Steen, nephews Mark, Keith, Jonathan, Niall, Conor, Paul and Mikey, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives, neighbours and his many good friends.

Mike will repose at his brother John's home in Coolegarry (N37 VX64) on Wednesday evening (September 27th) from 3pm until 7pm.

Removal on Thursday morning (September 28th) to arrive at St Brigid's Church, Curraghboy (N37 KV62) for Mass of the Resurrection at 11am. Burial afterwards in Cam Cemetery.
