Higgins suffers injury blow as season looks over

Jennifer Higgins of Clann na nGael and Roscommon has suffered a major injury blow as she was preparing to make her AFLW debut for Sydney Swans.

Higgins sustained the dreaded ACL injury during a practice match against Brisbane Lions last weekend and is now set to miss the remainder of the season.

Confirming the injury on their website, Sydney Swans posted the following update: "Unfortunately, Jennifer Higgins sustained an ACL injury during our match scrimmage against the Brisbane Lions on the weekend.

"She will review with specialists in coming days in order to determine a more comprehensive management plan."

Having given Roscommon football distinguished service for over a decade, Higgins described the opportunity to play Aussie Rules football professionally as "a dream come true".

Higgins, whose club was Western Gaels before moving to Clann na nGael, did not play for Roscommon during the 2023 season.

She travelled to Australia with her husband, Clann na nGael footballer Cathal Shine, for the start of pre-season training last June.
