Athlone students travel to Singapore for 'F1 in Schools' world finals

A six-strong team from Athlone's Marist College set off yesterday (Wednesday) to compete at the F1 in Schools world finals in Singapore.

It's sure to be an unforgettable trip for the 'Catalyst Racing' team, which consists of Owen McNamara, David O’Shea, Donal McDermott, Adam Kenny, Eoin Kane and Conor Rowe.

F1 in Schools is an international STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) competition in which groups of students have to design and manufacture a miniature Formula 1 car out of the official F1 Model Block using CAD/CAM design tools.

The Marist College has a very accomplished record in the competition, with five of its teams competing in world finals previously, and the 2016 team emerging as outright winners.

On social media this week, the school said it was very proud of the Catalyst Racing team and was wishing the lads the best of luck in Singapore.

The F1 in Schools world finals will be held from Sunday to Tuesday, September 10-12.

Earlier this year, the Marist College team appeared on the Ireland AM television show to discuss their involvement in the competition, and you can watch that clip here:
