Local councillor welcomes start of flood works at Assumption Road

Cllr Aengus O’Rourke has welcomed the commencement of flood works to the rear of Assumption Road in Athlone.

The Fianna Fáil councillor said: “The long back lane that runs behind Assumption Road, Tormey Villas, St Kieran’s Community Centre and the new housing estate Esker Park has been dogged with flooding issues for the past number of years.

"There have been two low-lying areas that have persistently caused the problem. In 2020 I secured funding from Westmeath County Council to have works carried out to alleviate one of the flood spots near the Esker Park end of the lane. And, that work has certainly helped the situation at that location.

"This year I secured money to deal with the second and last problematic location on the lane, behind St Kieran’s Community Centre.

"I am delighted to say that the work on the ground commenced yesterday (Monday, September 4) and will take approximately two weeks to complete.

"Along with this work, I have also organised for works to be carried out at the carpark at St Kieran’s to improve the layout for parking.

"However, I have asked the engineers to draw up a more substantial refurbishment plan for the entirety of the carpark at St Kieran’s Community Centre. This is a very busy location and it needs for car parking and disability parking to be enhanced.

"I would hope to see this work completed before the end of this year," concluded the Fianna Fáíl councillor.
