Weather warnings as wind and rain on the way

Weather update from Met Éireann

"Heavy rain with thundery downpours" are on the way today (Friday) and tonight with strong winds at times.

Met Éireann has issued a number of weather warnings for different parts of the country set to take effect at various times throughout the day.

A status yellow rain warning for 14 counties will kick in at 5pm this evening. It includes Cavan, Monaghan, Meath, Westmeath, Longford, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, Sligo, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Louth and Wicklow.

The national weather forecaster is warning of spot flooding and difficult travelling conditions, as well as wave overtopping on eastern facing coasts.

The warning will remain in place until 6am on Saturday.

A status yellow wind warning will also take effect for Leinster and Munster from 9pm until 6am.

Met Éireann says it will become very windy with southeast winds, veering southwest gusting up to 110km/h, higher on exposed coasts and hills.

Potential Impacts include damage to temporary structures, travel disruption and power outages.

Otherwise the weather will be mostly cloudy today with scattered outbreaks of rain this morning and a few limited bright spells. During the afternoon, heavy and persistent rain will move in across the south and southwest of the country with the likelihood of some flooding.

Heavy rain and thundery downpours will then extend nationwide during the evening with the continued potential for flooding. An increasingly blustery day with fresh to strong and gusty east to southeast winds, with gales developing on southern and eastern coasts later. A humid day with highs of 17 to 22 degrees with mist and fog on coasts and hills.

Wet and very windy overnight with heavy rain and some thundery downpours. Extremely windy or stormy conditions may develop for a time overnight in southern and eastern coastal areas with severe gusts possible. Spot flooding is likely with difficult travelling conditions. Drier and clearer conditions will develop in southern areas later in the night. Lowest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees with fresh to strong east or southeast winds, veering southwesterly later.

Rain in Ulster will clear quickly on Saturday morning to leave a bright and breezy day nationwide with sunny spells. A few showers will occur, mainly in the southwest and west of the country. Maximum temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees in fresh and gusty southwest winds.

Clear spells and a few showers on Saturday night, the showers mainly affecting the south and west of the country. Lowest temperatures overnight of 12 to 15 degrees in moderate southerly winds.

Plenty of dry weather on Sunday with spells of sunshine and just a few showers, mainly confined to Atlantic coastal counties. A fairly warm day with highest temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees in a moderate to fresh southwest breeze. Clear spells and a few showers about early on Sunday night. However, it looks set to become mostly cloudy later with patchy rain developing. A humid night with lowest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees in a moderate southerly breeze.

It looks set to be a showery day on Monday with sunny spells and fairly widespread showers. Some of the showers are likely to be heavy and prolonged. Top temperatures of 19 to 22 degrees in a moderate to fresh southwest wind. Clear spells and scattered showers on Monday night, the showers mainly affecting Atlantic coastal counties. Lowest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees in light southwest winds.

Another day of bright spells and showers is expected on Tuesday. Heavy and thundery showers are possible, especially during the afternoon. Becoming mostly dry and sunny in the evening. Highest temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees in a moderate southwest breeze. Largely dry on Tuesday night with long clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in light southwest winds.
