Westmeath & Roscommon 2022 dog pound statistics
The 2022 Local Authority Control of Dogs Statistics report has revealed that, in total, 152 dogs entered the pound in Westmeath, and 92 in Roscommon. This number contains stray dogs, dogs surrendered to the pound, and dogs seized for breaches of Dog Control Legislation.
Of the Westmeath total figure, 137 dogs were strays, 13 were surrendered by their owners, and 2 were seized. In Roscommon, 57 were strays, 33 dogs were surrendered, and 2 were seized.
This report, compiled by the Department of Rural and Community Development, reveals that in Westmeath 30 of these dogs were reclaimed, and 47 re-homed. 54 dogs were transferred to dog welfare groups, and two dogs died of natural causes. 14 dogs were euthanised in Westmeath in 2022.
In Roscommon, 17 dogs were reclaimed and 55 were re-homed. 15 dogs were transferred to dog welfare groups, and one dog died of natural causes. 5 dogs were euthanised in Roscommon in 2022.
At the end of the year, 5 dogs remained on hand in Westmeath, and none in Roscommon.
In 2022, there were a staggering 49 incidences of aggressive dog behaviours in Westmeath, with 13 resulting in physical injury to either body or clothes. In contrast, there was only one such incident in Roscommon.
