World Cup disappointment for local fans on wet night in Perth

A Women's World Cup tie that began so promisingly for the Irish ended in disappointment yesterday, as Canada's come-from-behind victory in Perth ensured Ireland won't make it past the group stage.

The memorable opening goal by Katie McCabe - Ireland's first at the tournament - was witnessed by several local fans in attendance, including Coosan's Brenda Frawley who was there with her husband, Tyrone native Damien McVeigh.

It's winter in Australia, and Brenda told us that the weather at the stadium in Perth was similar to winter conditions in Ireland.

"There were over 17,000 in attendance. It was so cold and wet," she said.

"There was torrential rain from start to finish, but the girls gave it their all. The result was very disappointing for them and all their fans."

Bright lights, big stage: Damien McVeigh and Athlone's Brenda Frawley showing their support fo Ireland at the match yesterday.

A Perth resident, Brenda has been living in Australia since 2008.

In the lead-up to yesterday's game, she and her son Oscar met the World Cup mascot and saw the trophy during the World Cup trophy tour which visited all of the host cities.

To cap an unfortunate night for locals, Heather Payne had to withdraw from the team before kick-off due to a hamstring strain.

Heather, a past-pupil of Creagh National School and Ard Scoil Mhuire, Ballinasloe, had been one of Ireland's best players in the opening game against Australia.

Vera Pauw's team will conclude their first-ever World Cup campaign against Nigeria on Monday.
