Ukrainian community gather to highlight 500 days of war
The Ukrainian community in Athlone turned out in large numbers on Saturday last to mark 500 days since the Russian invasion of their home country.
The crowd gathered in Athlone's Civic Square holding anti-war signs, Ukraine and Irish flags and peace symbols.
In a statement issued to the Westmeath Independent, a spokesperson for the group highlighted the need for Ukraine to be granted membership of NATO, saying it is the only reliable security guarantee that the country can trust.
The spokesperson also argued that the expansion of NATO, to include Ukraine, would strengthen the security of entire continent of Eurasia and would be the most effective way to prevent possible wars in Europe.
The group paid tribute to the people of Athlone and all over Ireland for welcoming them and giving them refuge in a time of war, which is now over 500 days old.
"We would like to thank you for your open hearts, souls and homes," the statement said of the Irish people.
Thanks were also extended to Cllr Frankie Keena, who helped to organise Saturday's event, Tetiana i Nastia from Freedom school and everyone who came along to Athlone's Civic Square.
