St Hilda’s kids enjoy Lough Ree Access for All boat trip

Children from St Hilda's had an exciting day out on Friday, June 16 as they enjoyed a boat trip around Lough Ree.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), in partnership with Inlands Waterway Association of Ireland (IWAI) organised for 60 children from St Hilda's to travel on the 'Lough Ree Access for All' boat, a purpose-built boat that allows for wheelchair access. The boat features on the television ads for the National Lottery.

The starting point was the Lough Ree RNLI Lifeboat Station at Coosan Point, where the kids also got a tour of the station. They learned all about the equipment and gear that is used to keep people safe on the water.

The main boat trip took 20 minutes, travelling around the beautiful waters of Lough Ree. Luckily, the groups even managed to avoid the afternoon's rain shower!

Sergeant Paul Kelly, the Lifeboat Visits Officer, was involved with organising the event and said that it was a great success, and that everybody enjoyed themselves: “For many, if not all of these kids, it was their first time on a boat.”

“It was a great team effort with the RNLI, IWAI and Gardaí, all volunteer work.”
