Work restarts for next 10 weeks on Athlone flood defences section

Westmeath County Council has announced the resumption of work for the next ten weeks on the Brick Island / Priory Park section of Athlone's new flood defences.

The construction of this section of the flood defences began in 2018, and in a social media post this week the council announced that the work there was resuming.

"The OPW, working on behalf of Westmeath County Council, have recommenced works on the construction of flood defences at Priory Park/Brick Island for a period of ten weeks beginning Monday, June 19," said the local authority.

"Residents should be advised that there will be construction traffic operating within the area during this period, and caution should be exercised when entering or exiting the area," it added.

Westmeath County Council said it apologised for "any inconvenience caused" as a result of the works.
