Rossies learn fate as Galway draw Mayo

Roscommon have been drawn against Cork in the All-Ireland SFC preliminary quarter-finals.

Interestingly, both Roscommon and Cork have beaten Mayo in this year's championship, with the Rossies doing so in the Connacht championship, while the Rebels claimed a surprise win over Kevin McStay's side in the last round of the group stages yesterday.

The most eye-catching fixture in the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals is undoubtedly the clash of Galway and Mayo, who met in this year's Division 1 league final, with Mayo coming out on top.

The other All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals are Kildare v Monaghan and Donegal v Tyrone, who just about made it through after drawing with Westmeath - see more details here. Kildare's regular home venue of Conleth's Park, Newbridge is out of commission at present, so it remains to be seen where their game will be played.

These games will take place on the weekend of June 24/25, and the CCCC will confirm details later today.

Yesterday's one-point defeat to Kildare ended Roscommon's hopes of progressing straight to the All-Ireland quarter-finals as Group 3 winners. In any case, the margin of Dublin's win over Sligo would have seen the Dubs top the group on scoring difference.

The main implication of Roscommon's loss to Kildare was that the Rossies finished third rather than second which meant they would be drawn away in the preliminary quarter-finals against a second-placed team from one of the other groups.

All-Ireland champions Kerry, Dublin, Derry and Armagh have qualified directly for the All-Ireland quarter-finals as group winners. Three of those teams are provincial champions, the exception being Armagh, who edged out Galway in Carrick-on-Shannon yesterday.

Meanwhile, Meath will be in opposition to former manager Andy McEntee in their Tailteann Cup semi-final, with McEntee now in charge of Antrim. Laois will meet Down in the other semi-final.
